Thinking about being a technical writer...is this a practical field?

I would like to think that I am a good writer. I actually *like* research papers because they've always been easy for me. I was illuminated with the idea of being a technical writer because I heard the pay is in the 40s-50s, which beats my other dream of being a Licsenced Clinical Social Worker (counselor) making maybe half that. I'm 24 and my clock is ticking....I need to do something with my life. Do you have to be super technical to do technical writing. Help!
